As her children were leaving home to go to college, Hisako started
taking night school classes in printmaking at Santa Monica City
College and UCLA extension. She became good; some of her
prints can be seen here.
Her teachers and friends arranged for her to have a show at the
Garendo Art Gallery in Studio City. The show opened on June 7, 1980.
People who were there say that they had never seen anything like it.
Every print was sold! My mom went on to have other shows but
certainly this was very memorable.
In late November 2021 (41 years later), her son Mark was contacted
by Elisabeth Sadler. She is the daughter of Masako Shirai, the
owner of Garendo Gallery. She said that the gallery was
closing due to Masako's advanced age, and that they were planning to
have some celebrations of memorable events, including my mom's
exhibit. She somehow found Mark's number and called him because they
weren't able to find her (she had moved to assisted living the year
before).
We arranged to have the event on December 10, 2021 from 12-2. There
is a japanese restaurant attached to the gallery and we had a sushi
lunch.
